Sea Week – education fun and empowerment

Arts Week with Judy Murphy

The 38th annual Conamara Sea Week will kick off in Letterfrack this weekend, with a particular focus on climate action as it aims to empower young people to become agents of positive change.

Wildlife cameraman Doug Allan, whose work featured in David Attenborough’s Blue Planet series, will formally launch this year’s festival, which runs from this Saturday, October 22, to Monday, October 31.

Sea Week celebrates the marine and cultural heritage of North Conamara, with workshops, art, music, talks, walks and more.

An education programme running throughout the week in local primary and secondary schools, will involve the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, Fair Seas Campaign, and the Marine Institute’s Explorers’ Education Programme.

And, in addition to launching the festival, Doug Allan will share his Artic experiences – he’s giving a talk in the Oak Room of the Atlantic Technological University’s (ATU) Connemara campus in Letterfrack next Wednesday, October 26, at 6.15pm. It’s titled Climate Challenge in Connemara and Beyond.

Meanwhile, students of Youthreach and ATU Connemara will create a light display throughout Letterfrack as part of the festival’s Sea Lights project.
