Mayo 2-18
Galway 3-12
By Kevin Egan in Bekan
AS the highly questionable lyrics to the song “Blurred Lines” blasted out across the Connacht GAA Air Dome last Friday night, ten minutes before the throw in of the FBD semi-final between Galway and Mayo, it was hard not to wonder if this might just be something that we’d hear all about on the Joe Duffy Radio show one of the afternoons this week.
It’s easy to picture the scene. A highly disgruntled middle-aged churchgoer rings in, telling Joe how “it’s a disgrace, I can’t believe this is the message that we’re sending to our young people!” while some time later, a Connacht GAA spokesperson comes on to explain how it was all a big mix up, and the man who was picking the tunes thought it was a song about badly drawn 13, 20 and 45 metre lines on a pitch.
We’ll probably never know for sure, but chances are, that mightn’t be too far from the truth – because the one thing we can say for certain is that when it comes to the FBD league, everything is a little bit surreal, and it’s all a lot less than meets the eye. It’s football, in a balloon, on astroturf, where the three games played so far have seen the winning teams scored 3-21, 3-17 and 2-18 respectively, in January.
Yet while FBD league games under lights in a Dome might feel surreal, there is something warm and comforting about the familiarity and consistency of games between Mayo and Galway. Regardless of the setting, regardless of the context or the prize on offer, the natural competitiveness usually bubbles up to the surface once the two famous jerseys catch sight of each other, and that was very much in evidence on Saturday. Blurred lines blaring over the tannoy, followed by battle lines drawn on the field.
