Arts Week with Judy Murphy
Galway may not have a contestant on the new season of Glór Tíre – but one Galwayman will play a very influential role for two of the hopefuls on the show.
Portumna’s Mike Denver, one of Ireland’s most popular singers, returns as part of Season 19 of TG4’s long running, hit County & Irish music series.
Mike will be a mentor for two of the contestants – a role he has served on Glór Tíre for more than a decade.
“We’ve done a good few mentorships over the years,” he says, “it must be 14 or 15.”
Glór Tíre returns next Tuesday at 9.30pm, and the first two artists to be featured on the show will be Fermanagh singer, Billy Mac, and Longford singer-songwriter, Bríd Shaughnessy – both of whom are being mentored by Mike.
“I’m very lucky that Billy and Brid are two great, great singers,” he says. “If they want to know something on the recording end of things, the PR end, or radio, or what songs to pick for the show, I can advise them.
“I wouldn’t have been familiar with Bríd before the show, I would have heard some of her stuff on the radio, seen the videos she did. Billy has been working with me and the band for a number of years, and even before that I would have been familiar with him at gigs.
