Vandals destroyed three native Irish trees on the recently-upgraded Millars Lane walkway and cycleway on the western side of the city.
Local area councillor, John Connolly, described the situation as “disheartening and disappointing”.
Cllr Connolly, a frequent user of the route, said he was made aware of the destruction by a local resident.
“I didn’t notice any damage on Saturday morning and was made aware by my neighbour early Sunday morning.”
The Fianna Fáil councillor admitted that while it would be “very difficult”, the response should be for Galway City Council “to plant more native trees on the pathway and continue to promote biodiversity”.
Cllr Connolly’s disappointment was echoed by fellow area councillor Donal Lyons, who acknowledged that the Council has made a major investment and that it is “disappointing that people would take it upon themselves to damage the laneway”.
