An Bord Pleanala overturns permission for outdoor roofing at Crowes Bar in Bohermore

An Bord Pleanala has overturned permission for outdoor roofing at a well known city pub.

City planners had originally approved retention permission for a perspex roof at Crowes Bar in Bohermore.

But local residents took an appeal to An Bord Pleanala.

The roof in question already exists – and it was retention permission that was sought by Bohermore Ventures Ltd.

It covers an area between the main bar and the outdoor beer garden – which in itself is described as an unauthorised development.

But it’s been in place long enough that legally no enforcement action can be taken against it.

Crowe’s Bar argued that the roof allows customers to access both the beer garden and toilet facilities without being exposed to the elements.

During a visit, an inspector from An Bord Pleanala observed the area being used as a smoking area and for the consumption of drinks, with tables and chairs set out.

The higher planning authority has now refused retention permission on several grounds.

They include its links to the unauthorised beer garden – with the board stating that allowing the roof would consolidate and intensify that use.

Also noted was the potential for the roof to give rise to excessive noise likely to cause significant nuisance to nearby residents.

Plans lodged to turn derelict Clifden building into apartments and commercial unit

A proposal to renovate an existing derelict grain store in Clifden for commercial and residential purposes is under consideration by county planners – with a decision due around the middle of December.

The planning application, submitted on behalf of Paddy Foyle, proposes the refurbishment of the existing grain store warehouse building to allow for the provision of one ground floor commercial unit and three one-bedroom apartments at Beach Road, Clifden.

It is also proposed to extend the rear of the grain store for an additional single-storey one-bedroom apartment as well as provide four car parking spaces to the rear of the development.

The application described the grain store as a protected structure in the Galway County Development Plan 2022-2028. It is located to the north-west of Beach Road in Clifden.

The project proposes the development of a historical building which is walled-off from the surrounding landscape due to its previous development history and can be classed as of low ecological value.

The grain store was built 1829 but is now derelict. There are exposed rubble limestone walls, rendered to south-west gable, and having roughly dressed quoins. It is located on the quayside.

This large warehouse was orginially built to complement the high level of trade that was passing through Clifden harbour, but due to the shallowness of the channel and the coming of the railway this route for commerce went into decline.

This quayside structure, though roofless, is said to attest to the period when Clifden’s main trading economy was serviced by boat and is an integral part of the harbourside of Clifden.

It has become a major visitor attraction over the years with many tourists intrigued by its extensive history and ultimate decline.

Charites launch Move-Mber to make November an active month

One of Galway’s leading charities wants to make this a month of activity – and through that a fundraiser for their critical services across the city and county.

Ability West launched its Move-Mber initiative this week at Cois Na Coille, one of their Day Services based in Liosban Industrial Estate.

The idea, initiated by physiotherapist Alice Wainwright, aims to encourage the individuals supported by Ability West, along with their families and staff, to get active throughout November.

Initially planned as a small-scale project, Move-Mber has now expanded across all Ability West services in Galway City and County.

Julie Silke Daly, CEO of Ability West, and Ray Kelly, Chairperson of the Board, were present to kick off the Move-Mber initiative and get it underway!

In addition to promoting physical activity, Move-Mber also serves as a fundraising initiative to support the organization.

Participants are asked to track their movement over a week, whether it’s in the gym, through light exercise, walking, or swimming, and record the minutes spent on each activity each day.

At the end of the week, a leaderboard is updated, and participants are grouped into teams—adding a fun, competitive element to the challenge!

“This is a fantastic initiative to get everyone moving. We often take exercise for granted in our busy lives, but it’s essential for both physical and mental wellbeing,” said Julie Silke Daly, CEO of Ability West.

“This also presents a wonderful opportunity to raise funds for our services, and we hope the community will support us!” she added.

Members of the wider Galway community are also invited to join in and get moving in support of Ability West.

Families, staff, and the individuals supported by the organization will be reaching out for donations, and we hope you’ll consider contributing generously to this important cause.

You can donate to Move-Mber on iDonate at https://www.idonate.ie/event/move-mber

Galway marine scientists in acoustic sea survey from Strait of Gibraltar to Ireland

A group of marine scientists from Galway have completed a major sea survey off the south coast of Spain – collecting data in acoustic monitoring of marine mammals and underwater noise.

The group, led by Chief Scientist Dr María Pérez Tadeo – a postdoctoral researcher at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) – were taking part in the Acoustic Monitoring from Ireland to Gibraltar Oceanic Waters Survey (AMIGOS) survey, on board the RV Celtic Explorer.

Funded by the Marine Institute Ship-time Award the group commenced the survey in Lisbon, Portugal, on October 20. They followed transects around the Gulf of Cadiz, passing through the Strait of Gibraltar and on to the Mediterranean before traveling back to Ireland on October 30.

One of the main aims of the survey was to contribute to data collection in acoustic monitoring of marine mammals and underwater noise as part of the EU-funded Horizon project STRAITS (Strategic Infrastructure for Improved Animal Tracking in European Seas).

STRAITS is led by the Northern Ireland-based Loughs Agency and ATU is one of its lead partners with Dr Joanne O’Brien as Principal Investigator and María Pérez Tadeo as project manager.

Also working on the AMIGOS interdisciplinary survey were scientists from the University of Galway, University of Southampton and from the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group.

Besides the collection of the underwater soundscape, the group also conducted CTD stations in order to determine the salinity, temperature, and depth in the water column, water sampling to assess primary productivity, and seabird and marine mammal observations.

The survey was also a great training opportunity for early career researchers and students who accompanied Drs O’Brien and Tadeo.

“This survey provided a valuable opportunity to collect extensive data on marine mammals and underwater noise levels across European waters,” said Dr María Pérez Tadeo.

“These data will provide baseline information, allow us to compare noise levels across regions and assess the impact of human-made noise on marine life.”

“This was an excellent opportunity for the team to collect data for the STRAITS project but also facilitate collaborations with other universities as well as offshore training for ATU postgraduates,” added ATU Marine Scientist and STRAITS Project PI Dr Joanne O’Brien.
