THERE was plenty of success for Galway athletes at the Connacht Schools Track & Field finals held in the TUS facilities in Athlone. The weather conditions were perfect for athletics, and it was evident in the performances as almost 600 young athletes from all across the province came together to compete.
Rachel Warde from Clarin College, Athenry set the standard early in the Minor Girls (U-14) when she recorded an impressive gold medal double in the 75m Hhrdles and the 100m. Mercy Tuam’s Tailte O’Callaghan was another double medal winner when she made up for her second-place finish in the gruelling 1200m walk with a gold medal throw in the javelin.
Katie O’Haire from J&M Salerno was the impressive winner of the 200m, ahead of Aeveen Kelly from Pres Athenry. Not to be outdone by her team mate, Salerno’s Keilah Murray took gold in the 1500m, just holding off the challenge of Taylor’s Hill athlete Jennifer McCarthy.
Another medal for Taylors came in the 100m where Michelle Nnadi held off the late challenge of Rachel Francis from Coláiste Baile Chláir to take the silver medal, the two girls accompanying Warde in ensuring a full podium for Galway athletes. Holy Rosary College, Mountbellew recorded a nice medal haul when Rebecca Moynihan took gold in the high jump, before Jessica Moynihan secured silver in the javelin.
The medals collection in this age-group was completed by Isabelle Dooley from CBC who took silver in the shot putt, Claudia Coyle from Kinvara who ran a fine race behind the Renton twins from Westport to take bronze in the 800m and, finally, Erin Burke from Pres Tuam who finished third in the 1200m walk.
