With the grand auld stretch well and firmly in place, many of us will be turning our attention to the prospect of long hazy days on a foreign holiday somewhere. We are blessed to have two regional airports to fly from, both Shannon and Ireland West in Knock are both over the hour away from the city.
If it’s been a while since you travelled from Shannon, you may be up for some pleasant surprises. The management has invested €2.5 million in a state-of-the-art screening system which halves the dwell time for passengers through security screening and eliminates the removal of laptops and liquids from cabin bags.
This, along with their US preclearance facility, sensory room and the short walks from car parks to the terminal, provides an easy-as-possible journey for passengers, insists spokesperson Aoife McLoughlin.
“The installation and operation of the security technology ensures Shannon Airport is at the forefront of innovation and making it easy for our passengers,” she remarks.
“Shannon Airport is the only airport in the world to operate a combined European compliant and US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) compliant checkpoint system which means the passenger is screened once to both regulatory standards and therefore eliminates the additional screening requirements which apply at other preclearance airports.
“The benefits of travelling through Shannon Airport would be the shorter time it takes for passengers through our advanced screening system which takes the hassle and stress out of having to separate liquids and gels, laptops and tablets. For example, for a family of two adults and two young children – the time processing through screening is short and seamless, allowing them plenty of time to enjoy the journey.”
Shannon is one of the first airports in the world to be designated as an age friendly airport by the World Health Organisation (WHO) – meaning it has adapted infrastructure to make the journey through Shannon Airport much more comfortable.
