Tuam’s hardship
The continued failure of the Great Southern and Western Railway Co. to repair Crumlin bridge, near Ballyglunin, and afford facilities for the transport of food supplies to Tuam, has aroused growing indignation, and is resulting in considerable unnecessary hardship.
In other areas of County Galway bridges that have been repaired have not been interfered with for several weeks. When the present trouble began in the county, Crumlin bridge was blown up, repaired and destroyed again over six weeks ago.
No attempt has been made to repair it since; and the people hold that its destruction on the second occasion was merely fastened upon by the company as a pretext to close down that section of the line and throw some hundreds of linesmen and railway officials out of employment.
The roads are blocked almost daily, and to travel to Tuam from Galway, one has to journey by train to Athenry, and thence by a circuitous route of thirty-two miles to Tuam. The normal journey is twenty-two miles, instead of forty-six now required.
Coal is selling in Tuam at from £5 to £6 a ton and other essentials are sold at correspondingly high prices, while luxuries cannot be obtained. At regular intervals, the irregulars raid and loot the town, and during these periods the National garrison remains in its barracks.
Reinforcements were promised, but have not arrived, and the citizens are in sorry plight between two armed camps.
