Shock waves reverberated from Washington to Ros Muc this week with speculation that Marty Walsh, the former Mayor of Boston now serving as Labour Secretary in Joe Biden’s Government, looks set to quit frontline politics for a plum new post.
The son of emigrants from Carna and Ros Muc has reportedly been headhunted to take over as the head of the Players Association in the Ice Hockey Major League – with a multi-million dollar salary to boot.
This move to the private sector comes just two years after he moved to Washington as a key player in President Biden’s administration.
The Players Association board voted unanimously in Florida some days ago in favour of trying to recruit Marty Walsh to head up the organisation. The job would span across the US and Canada as teams from both countries compete in the same pool.
And there are strong indications this week that Walsh, who is ranked eighth behind the President in political terms, is set on taking up the $2m-plus a year job.
Final discussions centred around other details of his remuneration and conditions package.
And if he accepts the job, his working base will be in Boston, his hometown – with two days a week in the Canadian office in Toronto.
