Country Living with Francis Farragher
AT times I do get pangs of conscience about my far too intermittent efforts to read more books and that sense of intimidation I feel if any reading material passes the 20 pages mark. Maybe a decade and a half or so back, a friend of mine convinced me that the world of printed books was fast coming to an end as he told me about the amazing world of Kindle where you just click into a book on a screen in front of you.
I’m also told, rather worryingly (well maybe not at my age) that the era of printed newspapers is not going to survive the world of social media and instant news, fake or otherwise.
And yet, here and there, I get the urge to hold a printed version of a newspaper in my hand or to take a browse in Kenny’s or Eason to see if some topic might arouse my literary curiosity buds.
Another friend told me many decades back that if I ever wanted to write seriously, I just had to read James Joyce’s Ulysses, which I attempted to do for the best part of a week, before abandoning the project on the basis that I was close to the verge of a breakdown.
Some years later while going on holiday, I picked up a copy of Dubliners, a series of 15 short stories by the same author, which were written simply but beautifully . . . but as for Ulysses, no never again. Life is just a tad too short for that.
