THE CHIEF
Decadent Theatre and Town Hall Theatre
REVIEW BY JUDY MURPHY
There’s a lot of testosterone on stage in The Chief, Decadent Theatre’s production of Jimmy Murphy’s latest play. Based on the last few months of Michael Collins’ life, as the new Irish Free State was about to descend into civil war, The Chief is currently premiering at the Town Hall Theatre. We all know war isn’t pretty and civil war is particularly ugly, but who knew it entailed such shouting and spitting?
The central character of Collins (Ryan Donaldson) is served by his loyal lieutenant Joe (Kyle Hixon) and a new recruit, Kelly (Liam Heslin), a former member of the British Army, who had fought in World War I.
As events open, the rebel anti-Treaty forces are ensconced in the Four Courts and are refusing to surrender to Collins’ government. A missive from Winston Churchill warns Collins that if the new state doesn’t get its house in order and subdue the rebels, the English will be back, all guns blazing.
