St Thomas’ 2-19
Sarsfields 0-15
John McIntyre at Pearse Stadium
IT may be hard to credit given how long they have been at the top of Galway club hurling, but St Thomas’ could be getting better. The way in which they dismissed Sarsfields’ challenge in Sunday’s County semi-final at Pearse Stadium stands up with any of their big displays over the past decade.
St Thomas’ were expected to be seriously tested by the New Inn/Bullaun men, but they simply carried too much firepower, craft and quality in emphatically powering their way to a seventh county final in 11 years. And they have yet to lose one!
It’s remarkable consistency by any standards and Sunday’s impressive display was highlighted by their ruthless efficiency. St Thomas’ are now just 60 minutes away from emulating the feats of Castlegar (in the thirties) and Turloughmore (in the sixties) of capturing five county titles on the trot.
These two teams had arguably produced the match of the championship in the opening round of group matches, but back in July the ball was flying on lightning-fast surfaces; on Sunday, it was classic winter hurling where experience and cohesion can be more valuable assets. It was still a noble contest until Sarsfields gradually faded away in the closing quarter.
