Mikie Rowe came off the bench to score not one, but two equalisers in Longford on Wednesday night to set up what should be a tasty second-leg of this promotion semi-final in Eamonn Deacy Park on Sunday afternoon.
United huffed and puffed in the first-half and played like a side that had won just once in nine games as they struggled to create any kind of meaningful openings, but the enforced introduction of Rowe, after Ed McCarthy hobbled off with a groin injury, followed by Rob Manley on the hour mark, saw United play with a cohesiveness missing for the last few games.
While they had to come from behind twice, the visitors will feel unlucky not to have won the game, as David Hurley was denied by a top-drawer save from former United ’keeper, Luke Dennison, a minute from time, but the draw leaves the tie finely balanced, and should ensure a packed ground on Sunday.
John Caulfield stuck with a four-man defence which United re-introduced in the 3-3 draw with the same opposition in the final league game of the season last Friday, but despite scoring twice in that game in what was a rare start for him, Manley striker was left on the bench on Wednesday night.
