OUGHTERARD have seldom sampled the action in the higher levels of the local league, but an unbeaten seven match run since the start of the new season has projected them to the top of the First Division and, even at this early stage of the campaign, they look lively promotion contenders.
On Friday night under lights in Headford they went head to head with previously unbeaten table toppers Moyne Villa and inflicted a first defeat of the season on them by a 4-3 margin. The visitors did all their best work in the second half, after a Dean Greally goal gave them an interval advantage, before Dean O’Malley levelled matters for the home side.
However, following that setback Oughterard pushed on as goals by Dan Tuck (two) and Oisin Fleming saw them open up a 4-1 advantage, before Villa pulled back two late goals through Eoin Hennelly and Mark Gibbons. The win allowed Gareth Gorman’s charges move to the top of the table, a point clear of second placed Moyne Villa.
Now it looks like a division where there will be a number of contenders for the two promotion spots with Corofin United, Mac Dara and Cois Fharraige also in the top half of the table. Mac Dara were making it three wins in succession when they fashioned a 3-1 away success over St Patrick’s on Sunday morning.
An Eamon Ó Loinsigh brace had them two up at the break, before Ronan Thornton added a third on the resumption. Shane O’Brien got a second half consolation for the home side. Cois Fharraige surprisingly slipped up when losing to a Renmore B side who were marooned at the foot of the table. Alex O’Loughlin scored both goals for the City side in a 2-0 win.
