Country Living with Francis Farragher
It’s a bit like an accountant saying that they’re fed up of figures; or a doctor admitting that they’re sick of medicine; or a solicitor stating that he can’t take any more of the law . . . but I have to admit with the passing of years, I’m of the strong belief that exposure to excessive amounts of news is not conducive to stable times between the ears.
The confession is probably rather shocking, given that like a lot of other hacks, I’ve made a living from the business for the best part of a working lifetime, but is it really good for any human to subject themselves to the possibility of one Vladimir Putin blowing up our planet; the earth burning itself out over the next century; the analysis of another mass shooting in an American town where a ‘header’ has possession of a selection of assault rifles; or predictions of another Covid-like plague descending upon us over the coming years.
Somewhere along the way in the media frenzy to be first with the story and the news of impending doom, hope seems to have been lost from the whole equation. Admittedly, it’s not the easiest thing in the world to do a positive piece on TV about a family being blown to bits by the Russians in Ukraine, or about life after an earthquake in Syria, but we do need to find some trinkets of positivity through 30 minutes of film, where one story seems more depressing than the next.
