Galway 2-13
Cork 1-12
Eanna O’Reilly at Croke Park
THE Galway senior camogie team won an historic second consecutive Division One League title at Croke Park on Sunday when a tremendous second-half performance saw them overcome Cork by a four point margin. The title is Galway’s seventh overall and third in the last five seasons.
Considering the Tribeswomen have also delivered two senior and one intermediate All-Ireland title during the same spell, Galway camogie is certainly riding the crest of a wave and bringing home silverware on a consistent basis under Cathal Murray’s stewardship.
On Sunday at Croke Park, the Galway senior team once again showed a level of self-belief, composure and steel under pressure which has characterised their success in recent years. Despite playing second fiddle for much of the contest to a more experienced Cork side, the Tribeswomen stayed in the hunt before a superb fourth quarter saw them accelerate past the Rebels to the finish line.
What makes their success all the more impressive is that Galway went through this year’s league campaign with numerous senior players unavailable for a variety of reasons. The likes of Sarah Dervan, Heather Cooney, Niamh Kilkenny, and Caitríona Cormican have been key leaders for many years and their absence meant that Galway were without a huge level of experience in the side.
With Sarah Healy, Rebecca Hennelly, Ciara Donohue, Catherine Finnerty, Sarah Spellman, and the McGrath sisters also unavailable, Galway had to deal with the loss of a huge amount of quality in their ranks. Nevertheless, a new generation of leaders and skillful young players successfully slotted into the side, with their gradual improvement in the league culminating in a division one title success last Sunday.
