The Mexican Society of the University of Galway is presenting a multicultural celebration of traditional and contemporary world dances this Friday, October 20, at 8pm in the Bailey Allen Hall, University of Galway.
The International Dance Evening is fundraising event for Enable Ireland, Galway
This celebration of dances from around the world features traditional and contemporary styles. Artists and troupes from Galway-based community groups representing Argentina, Croatia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, France, India, Latvia, and Spain will take part, as will members of the Mexican, India and Chinese Societies at the University of Galway.
Galway-based members of Ability West will give special artistic presentations and there will be a performance from ThatDisabledDancer, who is gaining a great online following.
The Mexican Society is inviting everyone to join them for this unique celebration of dance, culture and solidarity that’s designed represents the diversity of society
This will be seen via Irish, Indian, Croatian, Spanish, French and Chinese dancers, while Latin dances will include elements from Mexico, Dominican Republic, Argentina and Cuba with rhythmic drama, tension and romance.
The Latvian Folk dance group ‘Rietumkrasts’, which means West Coast in English, will perform and celebrate together, keeping their traditions alive.
All the performers stress the power of dance to bring people together and to create happiness. That’s a sentiment echoed by those involved with Ability West. “Dance reaches all individuals, regardless of their disabilities,”says a statement from the group
The evening will conclude with an after-party in Sult with Latin music from DJ Matt, so people are encouraged to bring their dancing shoes.
All profits will go to the Galway branch of Enable Ireland, a charity that provides services to over 13,000 children and adults with disabilities and their families across 14 counties. Covering childhood to adulthood its teams work with individuals and their families on a plan for each life stage.
Tickets for the International Dance Evening can be purchased through eventmaster.ie. They cost €15 or €10 for students + booking fee. It will take place at Bailey Allen, Áras na Mac Léinn, on the UG campus this Friday at 8pm.
