UNIVERSITY of Galway Mystics long wait for a win in the Women’s Super League finally ended on Saturday when they claimed what could prove to be a priceless victory against Ulster Elks in the battle of the bottom two up in Jordanstown.
They were relegated at the end of the 2018/19 season, having lost all 18 games, and had also tasted defeat in each of their first eight games this season, but a stunning performance from Kara McCleane helped them to a gritty six-point win on Saturday.
UG Maree bounced back in emphatic style from their first home defeat of the season in the men’s Super League when running riot against Killorglin down in Kerry; but Maigh Cuilinn had another tough weekend, slipping to a 16-point defeat in Cork.
WOMEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
Ulster Elks 68
UG Mystics 74
A coming-of-age performance from Kara McCleane, who finished the game with 29 points, saw UG Mystics give their survival hopes a massive shot in the arm as they claimed a crucial win on the road to fellow strugglers, Ulster Elks.
The teenager played all but five minutes of the win as, with Hazel Finn still sidelined through injury, she delivered a performance that did justice to her talents.
The home side edged the first quarter 17-16, but with Naomi Ganpo-Nkwenkwa delivering under both boards, and twins Ellie and Emma Glavin also putting in some hard minutes, the visitors edged 37-33 ahead at half-time.
