IT was a mixed weekend on the road for Galway basketball sides, with Maree claiming a win in Kerry against Killorglin, but fellow Men’s Super League side, Maigh Cuilinn, lost a thriller in Cork, after almost clawing their way back from a 27-point deficit at half-time; while in the Men’s Division One, Titans also left Kerry empty-handed as a gutsy second-half comeback came up just short in Killarney.
University of Galway Mystics were not in action, being the team to sit out last weekend in the 11-team Women’s Super League, and they remain at the foot of the table without a win from three games, just below Portlaosie Panthers and Fr Mathews, winless after four games and three games respectively.
They are back in action this Saturday when they host the 2-2 Killester from Dublin in the University of Galway Sports Arena (2pm) on the same weekend that Fr Mathews and Portloaise meet in Cork.
MEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
Neptune 88
Maigh Cuilinn 80
Maigh Cuilinn came out just the wrong side of a thriller in Cork at the weekend after a rousing second-half comeback away to Neptune faltered at the last hurdle.
The Galway side had closed to within five points with four minutes remaining, but never managed to grab the lead despite a stellar performance from Grant Olsson, who finished as the game’s top scorer with a 29-point haul.
The omens looked bleak early in the contest for a Maigh Cuilinn side that had won their home season opener the weekend before against a tough Killorglin outfit, and would have travelled to the Rebel County with more hope than years past.
They trailed a red hot Neptune 27-18 at the end of the first quarter, and then proceeded to have a second quarter from hell, scoring only 13 points and conceding a mammoth 31 to trail 58-31 at half-time.
