The curtain will come down on a golden era in Galway’s retail sector at the end of this month when Treasure Chest, the city centre gift shop owned by Mary Bennett, comes under new ownership.
The veteran businesswoman has decided to sell up after 58 years in business, and while the identity of the new owner has not been revealed, it is understood that they are not currently based in Galway.
The 18 employees at the William Street operation have been informed of the transition, but it remains to be seen what the new owner’s plans are – and whether the store continues in its current guise.
The cost of the transaction has not been disclosed.
Mrs Bennett, who was awarded the Freedom of Galway in 2011 for her services to business and commerce in the city, has decided to retire at the age of 85, after she received an offer for the operation she created from scratch.
