Killimor weather the storm to capture intermediate title

Killimor 0-13

Meelick-Eyrecourt 0-9

By Kevin Egan at Duggan Park

If this was a boxing match, then the verdict at the end was that Killimor grew into the bout as it went on, they cut off the ring, and conducted the contest on their terms, and going into the final round, there was no doubt as to who was the dominant figure in between the ropes.

The problem was that with just stoppage time remaining to be played, their failure to take all their chances in the opening half meant their lead was just two points – the GAA’s equivalent of a boxer sticking their chin out to be hit with a sucker punch.

Meelick-Eyrecourt lined up their one, final, desperate bid to leave their underage partners on the canvas when they stood over a free from their own half-back line in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Niall Lynch tried to extract every bit of value out of his piece of ash as he sent the ball up into the dark rain clouds, from whence it dropped in between the Killimor 20m and 45m lines.

Enter Kevin Hanney to play the role of the head bob that dodged the punch. The rangy attacker, now operating as a third midfielder, leapt like a salmon to claim the dropping sliotar, and duly won a free.
