Galway University Musical Society will present the Broadway classic, Guys and Dolls, at the Black Box Theatre from Tuesday to Saturday, February 4-8.
Based on the story of Damon Runyon, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, Guys and Dolls takes the audience from New York’s Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, before everyone finally ends up where they belong.
A comedy about gamblers, showgirls and missionaries, the action begins as gambler, Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town, even as the authorities are breathing down his neck.
Meanwhile, nightclub performer, Adelaide, to whom he’s been engaged for 14 years, is really anxious that he marry her.
Nathan turns to fellow gambler, Sky Masterson for cash to fund the planned dice game, which results in Sky chasing the strait-laced missionary, Sarah Brown. There’s mayhem and lots of song before all comes good.
GUMS is a totally student-run society based at the University of Galway that aim to produce three full length shows a year. Cast members, director, choreographer and backstage crew are currently immersed in rehearsals for this production which begins at 8pm nightly in the Black Box.
The classic musical is filled with romance, comedy, and show-stopping tunes and it’s all directed, choreographed and musically directed by the talented students.
Tickets for the opening night of Guys and Dolls on Tuesday, February 4, are €15 for students and €18 for general admission. From Wednesday to Saturday, February 5-8, they are €18 for students, €20 for general admission, subject to booking fee.
■ They are at tht.ie. 091-569777 or the Town Hall Box Office.
