Galway women featured in National Museum project on community midwives

A number of Galway women are being featured in a National Museum project on community midwives in in Turlough Park in Co. Mayo.

Members of Woodlawn, Killererin, Abbey & District, Skehana and District, Milltown, Moycullen, Oughterard and Moylough Heritage Groups along with Galway Community Archaeology have all contributed to the project.

Bernie Doherty from Woodlawn Heritage Group is set to deliver a talk on her research on the topic in Turlough Park on International Women’s Day on March 8

Bernie will share the story of local woman Bella Anderson who assisted women with childbirth but was not a registered midwife.

More Galway are being invited to contribute stories and memories about community midwives in the 19th and 20th century to ouririshheritage.org.
