Galway City Council to look at ‘red light breaker’ cameras to nab motorists Galway City Council to look at ‘red light breaker’ cameras to nab motorists

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – The Transport Directorate at Galway City Council has been asked to report back to the city’s Joint Policing Committee (JPC) on the feasibility of installing cameras at traffic light junctions to detect motorists who run red lights.

Green Party Senator Pauline O’Reilly secured the commitment at the latest JPC meeting, after hearing that there were 85 incidents of motorists caught breaking red lights in the city in the first nine months of this year.

That figure was down 8% on the same period last year, according to the official local crime figures.

Senator O’Reilly said she had asked for this crime to be included in the quarterly reports presented to the JPC.

She said the figure for this year was quite low and was not reflective of the level or red light running that was happening at Galway junctions daily.

She mentioned Cooke’s Corner, Galway Courthouse and Aldi Westside as junctions that were renowned for this dangerous and illegal driving.

City Council Director of Services Brian Barrett indicated there may be issues with GDPR, but he would relay the message of the meeting to the Transportation section of the City Council.
