Galway accommodation sourced for 100 refugees

Tourist accommodation in two Galway locations will be converted to house more than 100 refugees.

A hostel in Galway City and a former B&B in Conamara are the latest to be contracted by Government for International Protection applicants arriving in Ireland.

The Department Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (CDEDIY) confirmed Waterloo House in Clifden will provide 58 beds for people seeking refuge in Ireland in two phases.

The former B&B on the Galway Road has 20 bedrooms and will house 47 new arrivals initially. Eleven more will move into the property in phase two a fortnight later.

A further 50 people will be accommodated in 15 ensuite bedrooms of Savoy Hostel on Eglington Street, opposite the main city post office.

In both cases, the Department said the accommodation “will be for families of international protection applicants”.

The Clifden property will be operated by David Scully of Fahy Investments Ltd, and staff, including a duty manager and security, will be on site “at all times”.

It has previously worked with the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS).

Meanwhile, Maplestar Limited own the Savoy Hostel and have been providing accommodation to IPAS “for over 20 years at a number of centres under contract to the Department”.
