St Thomas’ 2-20
Killimordaly 1-14
WHEN it came to drawing the short straw in this year’s Galway senior hurling championship, no team has fared worse than Killimordaly.
Bad enough to be drawn in the ultra-competitive Group 1 in Senior A, Killimordaly also had the misfortune to be paired against the top two teams in the county – at least on last year’s form – in their opening two matches.
About the only saving grace for the Nigel Shaughnessy-managed outfit is that with a generous four teams advancing from each group, they are far from a busted flush after a second expected defeat at Duggan Park on Sunday.
Having frightened the life out of Clarinbridge for three-quarters of their opening round tussle, Killimordaly had to refocus for this daunting clash with the county champions, and though they were again typically spirited, St Thomas’ superior quality and cohesion was telling in the end.
Perhaps, a nine-point loss was a tad unfair on Killimordaly. They were desperately unlucky with a couple of late goal chances, while Gerald Kelly denied Brian Burke with a wonder save in the first half, but to counter that St Thomas’ were uncharacteristically wasteful, shooting 16 wides over the hour.
