NOW fairytales are for children, but Colga are now making their own as they have advanced through six rounds of the FAI Junior Cup and following this success in Kilcornan on Saturday, are through to the quarter-finals of the national competition.
On a day for heroes no one shone brighter than goalkeeper Mark Greaney, who not only made one magnificant save in the opening half, but later proceeded to save all three Avenue penalties in the shoot out, while Neil Greaney, Gary Forde and Peter Greaney all did the business for the home side as they slotted home their spot kicks.
In front of a large crowd at the Clarinbridge venue, the home side were sluggish in the opening quarter, but once they grew into the game, Ciolga were comfortably a match for the more highly rated visitors. Though the penalty saves were the highlight, there is no doubt Colga’s equaliser just a minute after the Ennis side had taken the lead was crucial as the visitors went into sleep mode after making the breakthrough.
The lead goal came on 63 minutes when a quick break from the back saw the ball switched left and from where Eliaz Kunz made ground before making it 1-0 with a shot from the edge of the box. The response was very impressive as Colga attacked straight from the kick off and, within a minute, the ball was in the net at the other end.
