Music for Galway has a busy couple of weeks in store, which includes a visit by the National Symphony Orchestra to Leisureland on Thursday, October 6.
First up is a new initiative, the Galway Encore, which will take place next Thursday in Galway City and Friday in Portumna, when violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky, violin and viola player Sergey Malov and cellist Natalie Clein join forces to perform the string trio arrangement of Bach’s Goldberg Variations.
That’s scheduled for Thursday, September 29, at 8pm at University of Galway’ s Emily Anderson Concert Hall and in Christ Church in Portumna on Friday, September 30, also at 8pm. And, as part of MfG’s plan to bring more work to the county, Sergey Malov will visit Tuam’s Mall Theatre on Wednesday, inviting some 400 children in to Meet the Violins.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations were originally composed for harpsichord, reportedly to soothe an insomniac nobleman. The work has reached new audiences in modern times, thanks to piano performances by artists such as Glenn Gould. And it became infamous as one of Hannibal Lecter’s favourite pieces in The Silence of the Lambs.
