Dunmore native Tracy Bruen has long been one of Galway’s most important and prominent songwriters. Equally comfortable performing solo as she is fronting a band, the multi-instrumentalist has played at the likes of Electric Picnic and Body & Soul, provided support for Lisa Hannigan and Mick Flannery, and toured in the UK, Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
In 2017, her work culminated in a spellbinding debut album, Mirror, which drew on harmony and evocative storytelling. Almost six years on, she is set to provide a sequel.
Tracy’s sophomore record, Waiting, is set for release on January 27, a day prior to its launch night in the Róisín Dubh on Saturday, January 28.
The album has been preceded by two singles – Silence Crawls and What to Do – the first of which was accompanied by a video featuring Tracy on a dimly lit Quay Street. Given its appropriate title, it is no surprise that the album has been in the works for quite some time.
“I think I started writing the first of the songs in 2018,” Tracy recalls.
“The last song, Waiting, I actually finished the week I recorded it. It was the last song to finish and the last song to go on the album. They’ve been a long time in the mix. Some were pre-pandemic, and some were written over the course of the pandemic years… [The video for Silence Crawls] was borne out of a stressful situation where the person I was supposed to film with fell through.
