GALWAY United’s players headed for the beaches of Europe over the weekend with their 10-point lead at the top of the table intact thanks to a hard-earned win in Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night.
United captain Conor McCormack bagged his first goal in a United shirt in what was his 77th appearance for the club when scoring directly from a corner-kick in the 18th minute; and Ed McCarthy made sure of the points when scoring from a quickly-taken free-kick early in the second-half, leaving United well clear of the pack heading into the mid-season break.
A goal and an assist on his first start of the season the previous Monday afternoon was not enough to save Darren Clarke from the shepherd’s crook on Friday, with Francely Lomboto coming into the side in one of three changes on Friday night.
Killian Brouder was always going to be missing out through suspension, with Rob Slevin – who was returning from the ‘naughty’ step – slotting in for him beside Maurice Nugent in the heart of defence; but in another surprise selection, Vince Borden came back into the side after being dropped for the first time on the previous Monday, with Rob Manley the one to make way for the American, despite the striker also excelling in that rout of Harps, including bagging a goal.
That saw a couple of positional switches, with Stephen Walsh moving back up top as the target man, and Dave Hurley pushing up from a holding midfield position to play the number 10 role he has excelled in this season.
The home side were missing Ethan Boyle and Darragh Levingston through suspension, but they left appearance record holder and all-time top scorer, Danny Furlong, on the bench.
