Ardrahan 1-19
Liam Mellows 2-11
Eanna O’Reilly at Kenny Park
ARDRAHAN caused something of an upset in the Senior B hurling championship at Kenny Park on Saturday evening, overcoming Liam Mellows by five points in very difficult conditions. Syl Dolan’s side were full value for their win against a Mellows’ team which performed below par and struggled to match their opponent’s intensity for long spells.
Despite the heavy rainfall in Athenry, the teams produced an entertaining contest, with some impressive score taking on display. Mellows’ Adrian Morrissey opened the scoring with a pointed free before Jason Kennedy fired over a score at the other end for the South Galway side. County forward Cianan Fahy then pointed for Ardrahan after a strong run through the Mellows defence.
The city side then got a major boost when Conor Kavanagh reacted quickest to a loose ball in the square to fire first time to the net. Ardrahan didn’t allow the concession of this goal to rattle them however, and went on to match Mellows score for score during the next 20 minutes.
Conor Cosgrove, Kennedy with his second, and Fahy (free and ’65), raised white flags for Ardrahan during this spell, while Tadhg Haran (two excellent points), Kavanagh and Jack Forde kept the scoreboard ticking for Mellows.
