Eddi Reader and the Alan Kelly Gang will bring their acclaimed partnership back to Galway this Sunday, September 21, as part of a nationwide tour.
Scottish singer-songwriter Eddi and accordion player Alan, from Roscommon and living in Galway City, have formed an enduring musical collaboration, focusing on the traditions of their own countries.
One of popular music’s most exciting performers, Eddi Reader first came to prominence with her band Fairground Attraction, and she also worked with Eurythmics and Gang of Four. She secured her place in Scottish musical history with her revival of Robert Burns’ treasured poems. From the traditional to the contemporary, she brings joyous life to all songs.
Alan, meanwhile, is regarded as Ireland’s innovative piano accordion maestro and is a leading light in contemporary Irish trad. His experimental approach to music strikes a balance between tradition and innovation, and has received critical acclaim across the globe.
His group, the Alan Kelly Gang, includes original member, acclaimed flautist and singer, Steph Geremia; long-time friend and collaborator, Jim Higgins (Christy Moore/The Stunning) on bodhrán and percussion, and a welcome new addition, Mark Kelly (Altan) on guitar. They are known for a mix of strong dynamics, driving rhythms and buoyant harmonies.
Since 2010, their collaboration with Eddi and her husband, John Douglas (Trashcan Sinatras) on guitar and vocals has given audiences a new perspective on tradition – with sell-out tours and festival appearances in Scotland, Ireland, England, Australia, Canada and Europe.
This year, they celebrate 15 years of friendship and collaboration.
Having kicked off the tour in London on September 5, Eddi and Alan are now performing across Ireland, bringing their distinctive harmonies, imaginative arrangements and rich stories to venues, including the Town Hall and promising what Living Tradition magazine described as “an astonishing concert”.
Their show is at 8pm this Sunday, with tickets at tht.ie, 091-569777 or the box office.
