A new interactive exhibition which features work by members of That’s Life – an arts programme for people with intellectual disabilities, run by the Brothers of Charity – is being presented at this year’s Tulca Festival of Visual Arts.
Ten members of That’s Life worked with artist Martin Maguire to create Persona, which will open in the city’s Black Box Theatre this Friday, November 4, and will run until Friday, November 11.
It’s a series of enormous portraits of the ten, who each adopted a different persona for the project.
But, says Martin, these aren’t portraits in a conventional sense, because viewers can use their phones or smart devices to introduce augmented reality and make the pictures interactive.
The exhibition also has a soundscape, featuring the 10 discussing aspects of the human experience; life, death, love and loss. Martin, who is originally from Mayo and has lived in Galway for most of his adult life, is a photographer who has worked on many film and TV projects. He’s also a writer – he had a residency with Druid Theatre some years ago – and an actor. In Galway, he acted with the now-defunct Mephisto Theatre, among others. He was previously involved in Theatre in Education, performing drama in schools., And, in the late 1990s, he worked on RTÉ children’s series, the Morbegs.
