Dunmore MacHales 2-11
Corofin 0-13
THEY don’t do things the easy way!
Dunmore MacHales qualified for the Galway Intermediate football final for the second year running, but they were pushed all the way by 14-man Corofin at Tuam Stadium on Sunday.
Despite holding a nine point lead after 40 minutes and enjoying a numerical advantage, Dunmore somehow contrived to be outscored by 0-10 to 1-1 for the next 22 minutes before substitute Conor Naughton finally sealed their final berth as he moved them four ahead in the 63rd minute.
The winners led 1-8 to 0-3 at half time with a strong breeze behind them in the opening 30 minutes. An eight point deficit was still a huge obstacle for Corofin to overcome and they were presented with another one when Connor Brady received two bookings in a 30 second spell early in the second half, the second of which could have been a red in its own right after a reckless high challenge on Shane McGrath.
Despite McGrath pushing the lead out to nine points, Dunmore looked nervy as they appeared unsure of how to approach the game with their numerical advantage. Credit must go to Corofin as they went for broke, pushing up high on Connor Gleeson’s kickouts as goalkeeper Tom Healy at times came out to midfield to challenge for possession.
