Sarsfields 0-22
Castlegar 2-10
DARREN KELLY IN LOUGHREA
SARSFIELDS’ greater firepower eventually told on Saturday as they pulled away to be crowned Junior B hurling champions. Kerril Wade contributed 10 points, while man of the match Sean Kelly put over five from play.
The sides were level for the fifth time on 42 minutes when John Connor’s Castlegar free left it 1-8 to 0-11. But Sarsfields had only reached half their total at this stage while Murt Connolly’s charges added just two more scores.
There was a strong wind favouring the city side in the first half and they built up a 0-4 to 0-0 advantage by six minutes. Captain Sean King opened the scoring following a James Murphy pass, while Jonathan Long’s delivery resulted in Cian Gillespie doubling the lead. Gillespie turned provider for Brian Fahy, before Fahy spotted Damien Sheridan who glided the ball over for the fourth.
Sarsfields were already showing their danger with Kelly getting an early effort only to be closed down by Enda Sammon and Fergus Ruane. But Kelly did tally for the New Inn/Bullaun team on nine minutes.
Colm Ward’s team began to work themselves back into proceedings. Wade converted his first before a Murphy free allowed Castlegar a 0-5 to 0-2 lead.
