Jinx Lennon has long been a mystical figure among fans of underground Irish folk-punk. Writing and recording music in various capacities since 1980, the Dundalk poet has only grown more bullish and outspoken as the years have gone on, littering his work with apostasy, humour and thoughtful meditations on Irish class and culture.
As he quotes American country singer Tom T. Hall – “if a man’s not writing about what he’s seeing around him, he’s not writing”.
Mystic may seem like the wrong word to describe some of the projects Jinx has released over the years.
There is a coarseness that comes with the territory of writing about real and contentious issues, and though that ethos is certainly not lost on his latest record, mystic is what he has achieved.
Walk Lightly When the Jug is Full explores open, Celtic tunings and intricate acoustic guitar, propping up stories of death, smoking, teen pregnancy, incels and the beauty of the west of Ireland.
Many of the tracks on the LP are likely to be played next Saturday, June 9, as Jinx Lennon returns to Galway’s Mechanics Institute, in association with the Black Gate.
