ONE of the living legends of Turloughmore hurling was honoured earlier this month with a special presentation to mark his contribution to the club that has been so much part of his life.
Now in his 91st year, Paddy Fahy from Cartymore won senior county medals with Turlough’ in 1956, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1966 as well as being part of the management team when the club won their last senior title in 1985.
Former club chairman, Jarlath McDonagh, and captain of the 1985 team, Frank Burke, visited Paddy Fahy in his home to make the presentation on behalf of the club.
Also present was Breda Finn of Murray’s, Turloughmore, whose great-grandfather Pat Murray was a founder member of the club when it came into existence in 1886.
Still a hale and hearty man who lives with his daughter Patricia, Paddy Fahy also hurled for Galway through the 1950s as the county strove in vain to add a second All-Ireland title to the one they had won in 1923.
Frank Burke told the Connacht Tribune that Paddy Fahy was a hurling legend in Turloughmore, who played a key role in the club’s glorious era of the early to the mid-1960s.
“He was also a member of the 1956 senior winning side after the club had come up to senior in 1954 but he’ll probably be remembered most for this contribution to the six-in-a-row team of 1961 to 1966.
“Paddy actually missed out on the 1961 success [over Fohenagh] as he had gone to America to hurl with the Harry Boland’s club in Chicago, but after returning home, he was a vital man in the county final wins from 1962 to 1966,” said Frank Burke.
