Galway 1-18
Down 0-10
Eanna O’Reilly at Páirc Esler
THE Galway senior camogie team booked their place in the All-Ireland semi-final, with a comprehensive win over Down on Saturday in Newry. The Tribeswomen had too much quality for a hardworking Down team which ultimately lacked the attacking quality to match the visitors on the scoreboard.
As with all inter-county camogie and ladies football matches last weekend, both teams carried out an equality protest prior to the start of the match.
Backed by a strong wind in the first half, Galway wasted no time in getting to the pitch of the contest. Down tackled hard but illegally in defence, and Carrie Dolan had the visitors 0-4 to 0-0 ahead seven minutes into the first half. Niamh Mallon opened Down’s account with her first pointed free.
The Tribeswomen soon responded however, with a goal at the other end. A throw in on the 21 metre line saw Niamh Hanniffy gain possession, before she showed great strength to break through and flick the ball past Catherine McGourty to the net.
The visitors tallied the next four points without reply, during an excellent ten minute spell. Sarah Spellman fired over a good score from the left wing, before Aoife Donohue added an impressive individual effort shortly after.
Niamh Hanniffy and Carrie Dolan also raised white flags, as Galway made it 1-8 to 0-1. Mallon replied with Down’s second score, but two Dolan frees saw Galway stretch into an 11-point lead approaching half time.
