Kilkenny 1-13
Galway 0-12
Eanna O’Reilly at Croke Park
GALWAY’S reign as All-Ireland senior camogie champions came to an end on Saturday evening at Croke Park when falling to a four-point defeat to Kilkenny.
The loss ended Galway’s 15-match unbeaten run on a disappointing day for Cathal Murray’s charges. A strong first half performance from the Tribeswomen seemed to indicate business as usual, but they failed to replicate the same quality in the second half, as the Cats took advantage of their fade out.
For the second match in a row, Galway produced a disjointed second half display, which allowed Kilkenny to turn the momentum in their favour. A four-point scoring total, with only one coming from play, reflected a half in which the the title holders struggled to produce the quality which characterises their best performances.
It was disappointing for Galway, after a first half which had promised so much. They overcame a slow start in the opening ten minutes, to dominate the next twenty. Leading by 0-8 to 0-6 at the interval, with some of their key players starting to click, it looked like Murray’s team were in a good position to push on.
Galway’s failure to convert a number of goal chances proved costly in the end, with Kilkenny ‘keeper Aoife Norris having an excellent day between the posts. Galway’s endeavour and battling qualities were ever present, but they didn’t produce enough quality, particularly in attack, during the second period.
