GALWAY will be aiming to secure the county’s inaugural National Ladies Football League Division One title when they face Kerry on Saturday at Croke Park (throw-in 5pm).
With opportunities to play in GAA Headquarters few and far between since Galway’s one and only All Ireland success in 2004, this is a chance for this crop of players to secure silverware at Croke Park.
The task is difficult with Galway facing a Kerry side who defeated them in last year’s championship while the Munster outfit also secured the spoils when these outfits met in the final round of the league three weeks ago. Kerry will be eager to banish any lingering memories from their previous outing in Croke Park; a nine point defeat to Meath in last year’s All Ireland final.
With Kerry having not claimed the Division One league crown in 32 years and Galway aiming to win this title for the first time in the county’s seventh final appearance, this is a unique final pairing. Despite Kerry not winning Division One since 1991, a win here would place them joint top of the roll of honours list alongside Cork.
Galway have won one game in Croke Park since lifting the Brendan Martin Cup in ’04. That victory came against Mayo in the 2019 All Ireland semi-final before subsequently coming up short in the decider against Dublin. The Tribeswomen’s last appearance in Croke Park came three years ago in the now infamous All Ireland semi-final defeat to Cork, where a late venue change meant Galway were only permitted a seven minute warm-up.
