Quick to see the immediate material advantages which would accrue to the town from the proposed fusion of the Midland and Southern railway systems, the people of Athenry have lost no time in directing the attention of the directors of the Midland Company to the necessity for extensions at the Athenry railway station.

A deputation consisting of public men, the local clergy and traders have arranged to meet the directors of the Midland Railway at Athenry on Wednesday, July 4, for an exchange of views in regard to the question of the development of the railway station.

What the development of the station would mean to Athenry in increased trade, employment, etc., need not be stated here. Amongst certain sections, notably the trading company in the West, the proposed amalgamation of the companies is viewed with disfavour.

Only time itself can prove whether this disfavour is justified, but, at any rate, there will be general admiration for the thoroughness with which the people of Athenry have endeavoured to improve the shining hour.
