New sanatorium
Galway County Council will at its meeting tomorrow (Saturday) be called upon to take action to provide a suitable sanatorium for the consumptives of County Galway.
For this purpose, the balance of the Concanon grant, amounting to £3,098 6s. 1d., is still available, and the children of the late Mr. J. B. Concanon have decided that it shall remain available provided that all necessary sanctions have been obtained to enable the scheme to be completed by the 31st December, 1924.
A new scheme will be laid before the council for the purchase of Renmore House, which, as it stands, would accommodate twenty-five to thirty patients with staff.
We understand that this scheme will secure the sanction of the Local Government Department. It is entitled to receive the most serious consideration of the County Council. The tale of woe in the annual report of the tuberculosis medical officer, which we print this week, is surely a sufficient incentive to rouse the most lethargic body to action, and the Galway County Council cannot by any means be described as lethargic.
Consumption, like cancer, is one of the greatest enemies of mankind. Unlike cancer, however, it does not remain the riddle of the medical fraternity. If detected and treated in time, it can be definitely cured, and even where a cure is not effected, the provision of proper sanatoria can do much to alleviate the sufferings of a lingering death, and to protect others against the most insidious of all infections.
