A Different View with Dave O’Connell
It was Christy Moore who famously offered a tenner to St Anthony to help him find some sleep, although that in fairness was in the midst of withdrawal symptoms from the demon drink.
Those who suffer from insomnia would empty their bank account into the coffers of the patron saint of lost things and causes – if only it guaranteed them twenty winks.
The experts would tell you that middle-aged people need to get at least seven hours of sleep a night to reduce their risk of developing several chronic health conditions, including cancer, diabetes and arthritis.
Chance would be a fine thing.
It’s not that we’re denying ourselves the right to sleep; it’s like trying to win the EuroMillions jackpot – the more you want it, the further away it gets from you.
It might be troubles on your mind or the reality that a bladder which once appeared able to hold half a keg of Guinness is now called into action after a thimbleful of water.
You can’t sleep like a baby anymore because you’re a grown adult.
And you head is full of thoughts that might be big ones – your job, your mortgage, the bank you’ll have to rob to pay for this month’s light.
Or it might be niggling, little questions – like is the cat out, are the bins out, are the adult children home, is the door locked, is the car locked, is the immersion off, what was that creaking noise, where’s the mobile phone, is it charging?
There is no end of things to bother you as you try to steer yourself into the Land of Nod, and almost always they are things you don’t give a second thought to when you’re wide awake.
