Mayo 3-13
Galway 2-9
GALWAY’S hopes of winning five Connacht ladies football titles on the trot were dashed as a worrying second half display saw them suffer a disappointing defeat at MacHale Park on Sunday.
The Tribeswomen only kicked 1-1 in the final period with just one score from play. Galway entered this contest keen to atone for their heavy league final defeat to Kerry. However, the issues on display in Croke Park last month reared their ugly head once more. Retaining possession from their own kickout while Galway were also guilty of sloppy unforced errors which plagued their second half display.
There are increasing worries over Galway’s defence as they have now shipped a combined total of 8-24 in their past two games. A bad pattern has emerged for Galway this year as they tend to concede scores in bunches.
They shipped an unanswered 2-2 in the first half of the league final and 2-8 without reply either side of the break in that same game. They conceded three goals in a four minute spell against Cork in the Spring while on Sunday, they coughed up 1-3 without reply in the opening six minutes as they endured a disastrous start with the elements at their back.
Although Galway recovered to lead by a point at the break, Mayo made effective use of the wind. After a Leanne Coen goal edged Galway in front, the league finalists coughed up 1-4 in succession from the 43rd to the 52nd minute. This scuppered Galway’s hopes of regaining provincial silverware.
