Hundreds of children took to the streets of Tuam on Friday as part of a massive celebration to mark the Creative Schools initiative.
And the Under The Sea theme had a definite Macnas influence as the community theatre group worked with pupils from Trinity Primary School, who donned headgear and costumes that would have been worthy of any Galway city parade.
Trinity Primary School is an amalgamation of the Mercy, Presentation and St Pat’s primary schools and the pupils came out in force for this particular celebration.
The sun shone down as secondary school students from local Presentation College and St Jarlath’s College lined the route for the innovative pupils who were expertly marshalled by their teachers. Stage Left Youth Theatre Group also participated in the all-inclusive parade, which involved special needs pupils at the school, who presented their own showcase of events along the route.
Lorraine Burke, Principal of Trinity Primary School, Tuam explained the approach to this project.
“We have 770 children in our school and for every child to be given a voice was important,” she explained, adding that the three schools had come together back in 2019.
“We are celebrating the culmination of our Creative Schools project, during which we worked with the Arts Council. We created an Arts Squad and worked with the local community and in association with Macnas and many other artists.
