Corinthians closed the gap on leaders Greystones with an impressive bonus-point win over Sligo at Hamilton Park in Strandhill on Saturday afternoon. The bonus-point win, coupled with Greystones 20-19 win over Wanderers – but without a bonus point – closes the gap between the top two to four points while also extending Corinthians’ advantage over third-placed Dungannon to 14 points.
Sligo now lie in seventh in the table, but they are only two points behind Dungannon; and given the fact Dungannon are just nine points ahead of Galwegians, who are ninth, it means that this season is far from over with the second round of fixtures starting in early January.
Conditions were bitterly cold for this game, with the Sligo club deserving great credit for having the pitch in playable condition, covering the ground in tarpaulin overnight to stop it from freezing, and in as a result, it was one of the few games that survived the weather conditions.
Corinthians started the brighter, as has often been the case this season, scoring two tries through John Forde and man-of-the-match John Devine in the opening 25 minutes.
Forde’s try started with a lineout that went through the phases, with Jack Noone taking the quick ball from the back. Finn McNulty took the ball into contact and with the penalty advantage going Corinthians’ way, the ball went through four phases from the five-metre line with Forde eventually breaking the Sligo defence .
