It was a game that long looked like being a title decider, but now it has taken on the hellish spectre of being a title coronation for the visitors when Cork City travel to Eamonn Deacy Park this Friday night (7.45pm).
The two clubs were tipped to battle it out for the league title this season, and the season certainly took on that appearance, as the sides have been the top two since April. However, United’s woeful run of results in recent weeks means that a win for City on Friday will see them clinch the title, as they will move 13 points ahead of United with John Caulfield’s side having just four games remaining.
The potential for a title party on the Dyke Road is set to attract hundreds of City fans – and it becomes even more attractive for them as a win would mean getting one over on their former manager, John Caulfield, at the home of his new club.
United are believed to be looking at hiring stewards to supplement the usual cohort of volunteers who help out at games, and given United’s poor run of results, there is every chance of a humiliating situation where visiting fans could outnumber home supporters on Friday night.
Caulfield says he has no control over how many fans City bring, but he is demanding that his players show more courage next Friday and claim a first win in four league games.
“From my point of view, we can’t control what they do or who they bring, we need to get back and win a match. We haven’t won a match for a while, and we were very good at doing that. They’ll be cock-a-hoop, they’ll bring a big crowd, and we need to perform.
