Health, Beauty and Lifestyle with Denise McNamara
Fashion has always brought happiness to Gayle Poppers despite turmoil in her life. The daughter of Dutch artist Noor Poppers, she had an unconventional upbringing. Her grandmother was a costume designer for the theatre and her earliest memories are of making dolls clothes on a sewing machine at her grandparents holiday house in Skibbereen, West Cork where she would stay half the year.
The other half was in Rahoon, Galway City. Her parents had separated when she was just two and her dad, a musician from Dublin, moved to Copenhagen where he died tragically when she was 15. Reeeling from his death, she left school after junior cert and decided to study beauty therapy, and later, aged 19, fashion design at the Galway Technical Institute (GTI).
After travelling in her 20s, she ended up in Melbourne, Australia for three years where she studied fashion business and worked in fashion magazines.
On her return to Galway, she became pregnant. But it was not a happy time.
