Galway United’s latest US star scored twice on what was a dream debut for the club to seal a thoroughly deserved three points at a grim, damp, muddy Finn Park on Friday night.
Vince Borden announced his arrival from upstate New York in style, scoring either side of half time from his central midfield role as a new-look United took all three points from a game that was far more in their favour than the final scoreline suggests.
United handed competitive debuts to four players, three of which were in defence with Brendan Clarke, Rob Slevin, and Regan Donelon all starting; and with Colm Horgan lining out at right-back on his return to the club after leaving for Cork City in 2019, it left Killian Brouder as the only survivor from last season.
Bordon was the other new face in the starting XI, Conor McCormack getting a new partner in front of the back four as David Hurley started on the bench.
If that sounded like lot of chopping and changing, it was nothing compared to the home side, who handed a staggering nine players with their club debuts – and with Keith Cowan back in defence after a season at Drogheda United, it left Ryan Rainey as the only survivor from the team that was relegated last season.
