Aughrim man appears in court charged with assaulting his wife

An Aughrim man has appeared in court charged with assaulting his wife and causing her harm at their home on Monday night.

Owen Naughton of Loughbaun, who’s in his fifties, appeared before Ballinasloe Court today charged with assault causing harm to his wife Sharon

The court heard Sharon remains in a serious condition in the intensive care unit of Portiuncula Hospital and that her condition has deteriorated considerably in recent days.

Mr Naughton and the victim are parents to five children, and a number of their daughters were in court to support him.

Gardaí objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the charge and their concerns Mr Naughton would interfere with witnesses and may also attempt to go to Portiuncula Hospital

The court was told he had a number of bench warrants issued against him this year and last year.

Judge Deirdre Geraghty refused bail and remanded Owen Naughton in custody to appear at Harristown District court by video link tomorrow.
